About "Furuhon Shokudo"

This book is written by Japanese novelist Haruka Hara. The story describes a quiet old bookstore named "Takashima" located in a corner of Jimbocho, Chiyoda Ward, Tokyo. This store is managed by the new owner, Miss Coral, who knows nothing about running a bookstore, and her niece Miki, who studies classical literature. Rather than being just a bookstore, it serves as a way station in life, where the two women offer a warm cup of tea to every soul that enters, infused with the fragrance of ink and food.

Customers who walk into "Takashima" may initially be looking for a specific book, but often, they unexpectedly encounter life-changing moments between the pages and the dining table.

The most charming aspect of this work lies in its perfect blend of the allure of old books and the local delicacies of Jimbocho, with the book delicately depicting the flavors that carry history. This time, the author specially visited the area to share five culinary delights and classic scenes that appear in the book.

About Jimbocho

About Jimbocho
The global benchmark travel guide "Time Out" has ranked Jimbocho as the number one spot in its 2025 list of "The Coolest Neighbourhoods in the World."

This area is home to over a hundred bookstores, including large chain bookstores and various independent second-hand bookstores, making it undoubtedly the largest antiquarian book street in the world. In today's world, overwhelmed by vast digital information, simply walking through the streets and alleys of Jimbocho, feeling the warmth of physical books in your hands, or casually stepping into an old-fashioned café with no time limit, this unique slow-paced lifestyle in the city is indeed captivating and makes one linger on.

1. Bondy Jinbocho Main Store

Bondy Jimbocho Main Store
In the area of Jimbocho, known as a curry battleground, there is a famous curry shop called "Bondy" where even on weekdays, you can see a line of people stretching from the second-floor entrance down to the first floor.

"Bondy" was established in the 1970s, inspired by the owner's experiences while studying in France and working in a restaurant. The soul of French cuisine lies in its sauces (such as béchamel and demi-glace), and the unique curry sauce created by Bondy is born from incorporating curry ingredients into this high-quality French demi-glace base. The owner even coined the term "European-style curry," which has Indian aromas and European flavors, making Bondy a pioneer and representative of Japanese European-style curry.

The signature dish in the restaurant is the "Beef Stew Curry," which is served with butter and two steaming hot potatoes. The beef is stewed to be very flavorful and tender; the fruit and vegetable sauce includes various fruits and vegetables like onions, stir-fried with a large amount of butter for a long time, and then simmered with red wine, resulting in an extremely rounded and rich flavor.

If you want to add layers of flavor, don't miss the three types of pickles on the table that you can add at will: Fukujinzuke, Pickeled Rakkyo, and Raisins. Among them, my favorite is Fukujinzuke. This pickle is made from seven types of vegetables, including radish, eggplant, lotus root, and cucumber (hence the name "Seven Lucky Gods"), and is seasoned and pickled with soy sauce, sugar, and mirin, resulting in a crisp texture and a sweet-salty interplay that perfectly balances the spiciness and richness of curry.

2. CAFÉ LADRIO

CAFÉ LADRIO
Founded over 80 years ago, CAFÉ LADRIO is the secret base where I want to immerse myself in the world of books all day long. The shop is hidden in the narrow alleys of Jimbocho, with a mysterious retro brick wall exterior, and you might accidentally miss it as you pass by.

The most famous drink here is the "Vienna coffee." It is said that it was inspired by the "Fiaker" coffee from Vienna, Austria, to prevent the waiters from accidentally spilling the coffee while serving it to the guests. A thick layer of cold whipped cream is placed on top of the black coffee. This way, not only is it difficult to spill during the serving process, but the hot coffee also does not cool down immediately, making it quite suitable for guests who are too engrossed in reading or talking with friends and forget the time.

Tasting Vienna coffee requires a bit of skill, but you can first take a sip of the sweet and creamy whipped cream, then feel the slightly bitter and rich black coffee that follows, and finally stir it slightly to experience the smooth and rich flavor that comes from the fusion of the two.

3. Western Cuisine and Cafe Sabouru 2

As soon as you exit the subway Jinbouchou station, you can see two bustling cafes on your left. One is the "Sabouru Honten," which mainly offers light meals and drinks, while the other is the second store "Sabouru 2," which features a rich selection of rice and noodle dishes.

Although the exterior is filled with a unique exotic original wooden style, once you push open the door, it feels as if you have instantly returned to the nostalgic Showa era. Vintage Western and Japanese pop oldies continuously play in your ears, and the red low sofas and the stable dark wooden tables are classic configurations that show the traces of time.

The first time you order "Japanese-style Neapolitan pasta" here, you will definitely be amazed by its astonishing portion size, which is as impressive as a mountain. However, the sweet and sour taste of the tomato sauce, combined with the crispness of green peppers and onions, creates a classic flavor with a slightly charred aroma that is simply irresistible. Before you know it, you can finish an entire plate by yourself.

If you visit on a scorching summer day, I recommend ordering a visually colorful "Four Color Floating Soda" (red, blue, yellow, green). On that day, I ordered the yellow lemon flavor, which was very refreshing and cool. As the vanilla ice cream gradually melted, the taste became even more gentle and smooth.
